FIMBA USA Spotlight: Bill Alexson of SportsPower International

"Sports have the power to change the world."

So said 1993 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and late South African President Nelson Mandela.

The beloved Mandela may have uttered these timeless words that many have lauded as the most poignant sports quote ever.

However, FIMBA first time participant and USA 55 team delegate Bill Alexson serves as a real life example of someone whose organization is actually changing the world through one sport – basketball.

Founder of SportsPower International, the 67 year-old Alexson utilizes basketball to positively impact the lives of countless kids across the globe.

Since the early 1990’s, Alexson has led more than 40 SportsPower teams comprised of former NBA players to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and all across the United States.

In addition to competing against national teams and pro teams in each country they visit, SportsPower players provide a far greater service than entertaining spectators in a basketball arena.

The SportsPower team is ushered into school assemblies, sports camps and recreation complexes to meet with kids. In these settings, the players share their personal stories with interested youth. The former NBA stars encourage attendees to make right choices, aspire to be leaders, understand the importance of character and faith and learn how to maturely deal with adversity in life.

In some countries, heads of state have praised Alexson for the impact SportsPower has made. Dignitaries and government officials have thanked him and his players for teaching sportsmanship, responsibility and values to so many impressionable youth.

Back in the USA, people readily recognize Alexson’s work. According to friend Lloyd Looram, “I met Bill at a gymnasium in West Palm Beach, FL six years ago, and we have been friends ever since. I am the better person for it. He is doing wonderful work for underprivileged kids around the globe.”

Alexson has spent a lifetime in basketball. After playing at Gordon College in Massachusetts, he played professionally in Greece for two seasons in the early 70’s.

Years later, Alexson began a 20-year career as a volunteer players’ chaplain for the Boston Celtics. Undoubtedly, it was during that time he discovered the enormous influence the power of basketball wielded across the globe.

As chaplain, Bill forged innumerable relationships with NBA players, some of whom eventually joined him on future SportsPower tours where they shared their personal success stories and private struggles as professional athletes.

Following his lengthy association with the NBA, Alexson unwittingly breathed life into to Nelson Mandela’s words and started SportsPower.

Since then, he’s learned how to leverage an awesome global sport for a greater purpose in impacting the lives of people all over the world.

Alexson looks forward to participating in his first FIMBA world championships in Orlando. He’s also anxious to meet new basketball friends who may be interested in collaborating on a SportsPower project in their own country.
